Competency explained: the gate before any licence
Competency is the formal confirmation that you have the knowledge, theory and practical training to be a lawful, safe firearm owner. It comes before any licence.
The training
Competency is overseen by the PFTC (Professional Firearms Training Council). Through an accredited training provider you complete the modules you need:
- The "Law" module - Knowledge of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000 (written only: an open-book and a closed-book test).
- Handle-and-Use for each firearm category you want: handgun, shotgun, manually operated rifle, self-loading rifle / carbine (theory plus a practical shooting test).
On passing you receive a training-provider certificate per unit standard and a PFTC Statement of Results.
The SAPS competency certificate
You then apply at your DFO with the SAPS competency form, two certified ID copies, proof of residence, a no-criminal-record declaration, your training certificates and statement of results, and character testimonials. Processing takes roughly 3 to 5 months.
