Competency renewal - no motivation needed
Renewing your competency is quick and does not require a motivation. A typical bundle: the SAPS 517(g) form, two ID copies, proof of residence, two colour ID photos, the fee, a copy of your competency certificate, your training certificates and PFTC statement of results, three character references, and copies of your licence cards.
Licence renewal - Section 24
Practice is inconsistent across the country: some DFOs require a motivation for a licence renewal, others don't. Section 24(3) says a renewal may not be granted unless the applicant shows continued compliance - but the burden isn't clearly defined. Discuss it with your DFO. Where the importance of the firearm warrants it, motivating the renewal is the low-risk approach.
